What is Faith?

faith

What is faith? A quick google search tells us that faith is “complete trust or confidence in someone or something”. Faith is a scary concept to most of us because to place our complete trust in someone or something runs us the risk of getting hurt.

Faith is blind. Faith steps out into the unknown. Faith takes you out of your comfort zone & forces you to grow.

We’ve all experienced people to let us down. We’ve all experienced people to not hold true to their word & break their promises. We ourselves are not perfect but we can trust that God is faithful to keep His Word. His Word is so solid that by it the Heavens and the Earth were created, The Red Sea was parted for the Children of Israel & Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead and ascended to heaven.

God will always fulfill His Word no matter what. He will move mountains just because of the promises that He has given to us. Therefore, we can see miracles happening in the lives of believers. He will make the impossible possible just because He said so. Luke 18:27 says “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”

Is there anything too big for Him to manage? God is the very embodiment of faith & His Word will never change. He is the same yesterday, today & forever (Hebrews 13:8) no matter what we do.

The Bible tells us that “it is impossible to please God without faith, for he who comes to God MUST believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6)

This is no surprise because why would God be pleased if we don’t believe that He’s able to do all that He says He can do? It’s like going up to Bill Gates & telling Him that it’s not within His ability to buy a Ferrari on the spot. It’s almost an insult. We understand that Mr. Gates is rich, how much more God that created everything?

We often limit God’s ability in our lives. It’s not that He doesn’t want to move in our life, but we hinder Him by our disbelief. Jesus Christ often spoke in the four gospels “According to your faith, let it be done unto you”. God will give unto you according to your level of faith. A brother at my church once said: “Faith is the exchange rate of heaven”.

We must fight for our faith & there will be a constant battle to take us away from believing that God is able (I will write about spiritual warfare in the future).

The Bible also tells us that “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Cor 5:7)

Imagine you closed your eyes right now and you’re not allowed to open them for a year. You’ll need somebody to lead you through the darkness, to show you which way to go. To provide for things that you cannot do for yourself due to your visual impairment. You’ll need someone you can consistently trust to assist you. Whether you like it or not, no matter how stubborn you want to be, the reality is that you need help.

Jesus says in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life”

We walk by faith in God’s Word for He is the light in the darkness. We no longer use our physical senses to dictate our life but we trust in God’s ability to see ahead because we are limited by our own sight. God uses the circumstances of life no matter how good or bad to test us whether we trust in His ability to see us through. We hold on to the promises of God & relentlessly refusing to accept anything contrary to His Word.

Jesus declares in John 14:6 the He is the way, the truth, and the life. So, by this, we understand Jesus is the truth. Truth is also biblically synonymous to light (see John 3:21). Jesus is also “The Word of God” (Revelation 19:13) & “The Word” (John 1:1). Therefore, the bible cannot lie. You cannot find darkness and deception in truth. When you hold on to the Word you are holding on to your savior, Jesus.

Faith is something that is practiced. We grow from faith to faith by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17) & it’s a life long journey. There is a great comfort knowing that God is able to see us through all circumstances & that He will never lie or fail us. He is our firm foundation & our calm during the storm.

Place your complete trust and confidence in The Lord, He will not let you down.
